The King of Budget Smartphones(Moto G 1st Gen Revisit)

Hey Guys, how are you doing?

These days you can get a really solid Smartphone for under $200, I wanted to take a look at the smartphone that started that trend, The Original Moto G.

This was a Smartphone released in November of 2013 and it really surprised everyone with it's extremely solid specs and great battery life for just $170. The question I want to answer today is, "Can you still use a 3 year-old budget Smartphone in 2016?", so lets get started.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Software -

- The phone shipped with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, but Motorola has been great about software updates and since then has updated it to Android 5.1 Lollipop.

- Android Lollipop is now 2 generations behind as the latest version of Android

is Android 7.0 Nougat, Motorola has announced that there will not be any more updates to the Moto G's software, Android Lollipop is still absolutely FINE to use as only 5% of apps on the Google Play Store require you to have Android 6.0(Marshmallow) or higher.

Hardware -

- The Moto G is sporting a Snapdragon 400 Processor with an Adreno 350 GPU followed by 1GB of RAM, a 4.5 Inch 720p screen, Corning Gorilla Glass 3, a 5MP Rear-facing Camera and a 1.3 MP Forward-facing or Selfie camera, 8/16 GB of storage, and a 2070 mAh* battery.

- Now you may be wondering, "Gee man, I'm not a techie, what do all these numbers mean?!". Well I can tell you that in everyday use The Moto G is absolutely SNAPPY, although if you put too many apps on it the phone can start to LAG LIKE NOTHING YOU'VE EVER SEEN. In games, I can describe the performance with one word....TERRIBLE, It cant even run 3D Games* that well, not to mention its absolute LAG in any game EVER! Moving on to Camera, this is a bit different. If you are going to be taking photos outdoors or in an environment where there is a lot of light, you'll be fine, there's a lot of detail, photos are nice and crispy, and its not overexposed or anything; moving on to low light...its TERRIBLE, you can't see anything, photos are washed out, and GRAINY! The Battery is small, but fine for an entire day of use for the average person. The Screen is an extremely LOW resolution for 2016 standards, but I have to say....it doesn't look much different compared to a better 1080p or even Quad HD display, colors are fine and the saturation is a bit warm, but it's fine. Finally, the Speaker...it's fine, sound DEFINITELY distorts at high volumes, but it's fine for calls, a quick YouTube video, or short music.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Final Verdict:

Is a 3 year-old budget Smartphone usable in 2016?

Yes. Sure it may have a terrible GPU and a terrible low-light performance in terms of camera... but for the average user, Yes. It's Usable.

Thanks for reading guys, see you next time!

*mAh - Milliamps

*By it can't run 3D Games I mean 2D Games that are drawn/created to look like they are 3D, for example Crossy Road, or Minecraft.
